In today’s digital world, promoting a brand requires more than just a great product. It's essential to leverage the right online channels to capture your audience's attention, especially in competitive areas like cryptocurrency. With over 2 billion active users, YouTube is an excellent platform for this.

In this article, we’ll share how we built a successful YouTube channel with minimal costs and provide valuable insights that can help you save both time and money.

Our Challenge: Build a YouTube channel for a Web3 brand, drive organic traffic without huge budgets for advertising.

We aimed to raise awareness for our partner's brand among people interested in cryptocurrencies and generally everything about Web3. YouTube offers some of the best opportunities in reaching the target audience and driving traffic. Algorithms on the platform push content before users with similar interests, and that helps channels increase their reach by creating content that is relevant to those audiences.

Here are the key steps that helped us create a successful YouTube channel in the Web3 space.

Step 1: Choose Niche and Define Your Target Audience

It's true, though-aimless traffic generation is quite costly and struggling for quality traffic is also highly competitive. Attract the correct audience by making sure your content stands out and appeals directly to those who will add the most value. Preparation is key.

Identify your target audience. For us, the audience was adults aged 25-45, interested in technology, economics, investment, and business. Generally, they are financially secure and ready to invest in IT and Web3 projects. In order for them to stay with us on our channel, the content needs to offer a solution to their problems.

Spoiler: it is hard to reach this category of audience with ads; it can be engaged only organically.

Why not target younger audiences?

Young people are harder to retain and generate less revenue, despite being cheaper to attract. Adult audiences, on the other hand, tend to engage more deeply and contribute more to monetization. To analyze this, use RPM (Revenue Per 1000 views) to track performance.

Don’t rush through this stage — spend time understanding your target user. We recommend conducting at least 10 interviews to understand who will be watching your content and for what reason. Once the profile is ready, move on.

Step 2: Analyze Competitors

To effectively compete for audience attention, it’s important to study competitors, especially those already dominating the “crypto niche.” Our main competitors were large channels and influential figures who actively create content around crypto and other trending topics. In other words, we had to analyze the content and strategies of the industry leaders, as their experience holds the key to success.

It’s easy to get started — just search for a few relevant queries, and the platform will quickly recommend active channels. From there, it’s about collecting the data and figuring out why some channels stay stuck at a few thousand subscribers, while others hit that coveted Diamond Play Button.

That said, competing with these channels is a tough challenge, as their budgets are far beyond what most startups can afford. So, the question becomes: how do we carve out our own space? We found two answers: unique content and a solid approach to analytics. Let’s dive into that next.

Step 3: Create Unique Channel Concept

After analyzing the competition, we realized that a traditional approach with a host wouldn’t work for us. The channel needed to stand out and break through the noise. Inspired by the satirical meme “Countryballs,” we created a mascot — Bubble — that became a key part of our channel.

Why Bubble? The crypto world often revolves around the idea of “inflating bubbles” — so why not turn this into our advantage? Bubble would be the channel’s host, guiding the narrative, introducing topics, and maintaining audience engagement. This mascot concept helped us stand out and lowered production costs.

Fun fact: After creating mascots, sales of M&M’s rose by 10%. Brand recognition increased by 25%. Figures are really great!

Step 4: Develop Content Strategy and Choose Formats

Our primary focus was creating content that combined humor with valuable insights. A "news" format was really effective, inspired by something like "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon". So, Bubble hosted the latest news and fun facts on Crypto.

We first introduced animation, but soon real people joined, and that made it more relatable. When familiar faces of influencers started popping up, people began to feel some sort of trust and connect with the channel more.

Step 5: Attract and Grow Your Audience

At the beginning, audience growth was slow — around 300-500 views per week. After implementing SEO optimization, however, the channel started gaining traction. Constant analysis, monitoring trends, and quick video creation helped us reach our first 1,000 subscribers in just one month, then grow our audience tenfold.

One of the main tools for analyzing traffic and trends was VidIQ. It helped the team track trending searches and adjust the content to stay relevant. We also made good use of Google Trends and Google Analytics to keep an eye on search queries and hot topics.

Step 6: Evaluate Results

After adding the mascot and redoing the content strategy, this channel continued to grow. Compared to earlier periods, on May 28, 2024, the number of views hugely increased.

Key to success: Regular viewers became a significant metric for us. Every time our videos appeared in a search, more and more viewership we were getting, thanks to our little mascot for earning their trust.

Cost of content: It remained low. Most of the content was created at a very low cost, and organic promotion showed very good results. Videos consistently ranked well, helping the brand build trust and recognition.

Key Takeaways

Choosing the right niche and having a unique idea can really boost your brand’s visibility and attract the right traffic.

Here’s a quick checklist for successfully growing your YouTube channel:

  • Know your audience. Target the crypto niche to an older, financially stable crowd.
  • Use SEO and analytics. Keep an eye on trends, search queries, and hot topics to keep your content relevant.
  • Create a unique channel concept. A mascot is a great example of a feature that can grab attention and create a strong brand connection.
  • Make great content. Try new things, ask for feedback, and keep evolving your content to keep your audience engaged.
  • Post regularly and stay flexible. Trends move fast, so adaptability is key. Posting 3-4 videos a day will help keep your audience interested and involved.

FAQ

Do I need a YouTube channel for my product/project?
Before launching your channel, it’s essential to define your goals clearly. YouTube works best when you have a well-defined strategy. Without one, the algorithms will be slower in promoting your content.

Here are some examples of goals:

  • Brand building and recognition: One of the key reasons to leverage YouTube.
  • Lead generation: Your channel can be an effective tool in your funnel to attract new users.
  • Selling tokens or NFTs: YouTube is a great platform for building trust and attracting investors.
  • Fundraising: The channel can help showcase community engagement and generate interest in your project.

Where should I start?
Start by setting clear goals and developing a strategy. This will shape your content and its format. You can also look at what top industry leaders are doing to get a sense of the niche.

Should I make shorts or long-form videos?
There’s no definitive answer. Shorts are a convenient format for quickly and effectively grabbing attention and boosting channel visibility. They help increase your reach.
Long-form videos, on the other hand, are perfect for diving deeper into topics, offering explanations, or providing in-depth analysis. Expert content tends to perform better and rank higher.
The best approach depends on your strategy. We combined both formats: shorts to capture attention and long-form videos for detailed exploration of the topic.
